 It was as if he’d slapped her. The light left her eyes and her beam faded to a polite smile. She started to speak, then stopped, turning her head to gaze out at the lake. Spangled with moonlight, starshine and colored lights on boats cruising the calm water, it was a good thing to look at. Calming and exhilarating at the same time.

 What had he said? Whatever it was, she was neither acknowledging nor answering.

“An emotional rollercoaster that will leave you smiling! This story was quick to draw my attention with it’s in depth details of what each character is feeling as the setting is laid out. We get not only the potential romance of Cass and Luke, but also several feel good moments between the older characters and with the teens. It’s a complex story with many pieces pulling at our hearts, but it comes together well. Memorable, sweet and very enjoyable. Loved it!”

A kissing kind of day…

Luke’s distinctive rap came on the door at that moment, and the women laughed as Cass went to open it. He called, “Evening, Zoey,” and pulled Cass onto the porch, wrapping his arms around her. “This is probably wrong on so many different levels, but I can’t care right now. It’s a kissing kind of day.” The last words were murmured against her lips, and all she could do was swallow a sigh.

 They’d avoided physical contact beyond the occasional one-armed hug, even though they’d talked all around the subject. The conversation always ended with the assertion that neither of them was interested in dating anyone, much less someone they were in business with. If they got a little hormonal, well, that was just the way it was. They were adults, after all—they could handle themselves. Besides everything else, they were in charge of two teenagers whose hormones made their own look like rank amateurs.

“I did enjoy and connect with the two main characters–Cass and Luke. Both are a little bit older and have been married before. That already made them more interesting and relatable to me. The story was sweet with a little conflict here and there, but never more than what the reader would want.

Later that day, walking through the orchard with Misty keeping her company, Cass looked through the branches of a pear tree, loving the picture the nearly leafless limbs made against the pale blue sky.

 She eyed the tree trunk where it divided. It made her wish she had one of the orchard’s ladders out here. It had been a while since she climbed a tree just for the sake of climbing it. The last time had probably been when the volleyball team camped near the creek at the back of the Worths’ farm.

 There weren’t enough leaves left on the tall Bartlett pear tree to offer the whispering accompaniment to her thoughts she remembered from those days, but still…it had been a while.

I think it was a pact. Between Louisa May Alcott, Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Kate Douglas Wiggin, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and a whole host of other writers who wrote exclusively for young people. I think they wanted to fill gaps in lives, incite laughter where there wasn’t enough, and provide a psychological hankie to dry tears no one else knew were being shed.
I am still happy when I’m reading.
In The Happiness Pact, Libby and Tucker are best friends from the time they were born twenty-seven minutes apart in the same hospital. They fill in the gaps, laugh together long and loud, and ease each other’s pain as they grow up. On their thirty-fourth birthdays, however, when they would have thought they’d learned all the words in each other’s life books, they find out just how wrong they were. Libby wants adventure and Tucker wants a family.
How they find their answers, and make their dreams come true, is what The Happiness Pact is about. I hope you like their story. I hope reading it makes you happy.

I loved writing this book. Tucker is gorgeous—he’s also a klutz. Libby is so ordinary that she fears wearing brown will make her disappear altogether. They made my heart ache, but even before they started down the path of “more,” I loved their relationship.
And I think more is the wrong word. Because there is nothing more or better than friendship. And there’s nothing deeper than the friendship between two people who love each other. While it’s wonderful and desirable to have friends who aren’t lovers, who would want a lover who wasn’t also a friend? I think that’s why, when writers talk about tropes and which ones are our favorites, I jump right onto the friends-to-lovers train.

Since I’m not much of a movie person—other than Hallmark Christmas movies, which could be several blogs unto themselves—a friend suggested a list of the movies that made me smile. The catch is, #One, I’m not a movie watcher and #Two, in order to be entered to win a Christmas stocking with a book in it, you need to post with a movie that makes you happy. Molly might not be tempted to try again with Brig Collier, a tough black-ops soldier, but he’s not alone. Brig has brought a baby, orphaned by war, with him, and adorable little Laila needs a home. Who knew a matchmaker could come in such a tiny package?
That book, in which one of Brig’s buddies appeared briefly via his emails from the battlefield about Laila, turned out to be the prequel to this new short story. Now, Caleb Henderson must decide whether to stay at war or come home at last. His decision wouldn’t be as hard if not for Daisy McCall, the director of a rehab center, who over Thanksgiving works her way into his heart. But Daisy, who has lost before, doesn’t want to love another man in uniform. Does she?
From the start, Caleb seemed to need his own story—and now he has it. I hope you enjoy reading “Her Thanksgiving Soldier.” I loved writing it.
