An Interview with the Luke and Filly Granger of Hardman Holidays

Two key characters from Shanna Hatfield’s historical holiday series, Hardman Holidays, visit us today. Set in the western town of Hardman, Oregon, this series of sweet romances highlights determined women and the men who fall for them in the 1890s.  

Welcome Mr. and Mrs. Granger. Tell us a little about how you met.
 
Luke: Let’s just say Filly is the best bargain I’ve ever made.

Filly: (Blushes and squeezes Luke’s hand) My father imprisoned me on our farm from the time I was fourteen until Luke showed up one day to call in a debt long past due. In lieu of his payment, Luke ended up taking me. Chauncy Dodd, the pastor at the church and Luke’s dear friend, insisted we wed, so we did.

So you married a complete stranger?

Filly: I remembered Luke from when we were in school, although he was a few years ahead of me. All the girls had a thing for him. Even back then, he was so handsome and charming.

Luke: (Kisses Filly’s cheek) I vaguely recalled her from school, but hadn’t seen her for years. The day I brought her off the farm, she wore a dirt-colored dress and rag on her head. When Chauncy talked me into marrying her, I had no idea I was getting such a beautiful bride, both inside and out.  

Tell us what it’s like living in Hardman. Don’t you have family in town nearby?

Luke: My sister, Ginny, and her husband, Blake, live in Hardman. He’s a magnificent wood craftsman and Ginny writes for the newspaper.

Filly: Don’t forget about Ginny’s artwork. She creates wonderful paintings and sketches, sometimes to accompany her articles for the paper.

Luke: And then there’s my folks. They just finished building a huge house in the middle of town. My mother vowed she’d never again live in Hardman the last time they left, but with the arrival of our baby, Maura, Dad and Mother decided to move back.

Filly: They’ll be arriving right before Christmas, along with Blake’s parents. They’re sailing over from England and will meet Mother and Dad in New York City before they all travel to Oregon.  

What’s the most exciting thing going on in your town this Christmas?

(Filly glances at Luke and smiles) Luke: Arlan Guthry, my friend and assistant at the bank I own, found a broken-down magic wagon on the side of the road a few months ago. The prestidigitator who performs phantasmagorical wonders didn’t have enough money to pay for the repairs so she accepted a temporary job as schoolteacher until Christmas.

Filly: Alex and her magic wagon have certainly livened things up in town.

Luke: Especially when it comes to Arlan. He’s head-over-heels in love with Alex the Amazing, but for some reason refuses to admit it.

Filly: (Gives Luke a saucy smile) It’s an affliction several men in town bear.

In the Sweet Montana Bride Series, the Emersons like to welcome newcomers with a nice, big meal. So when Reese came with a family recipe of her own, they were thrilled to serve up the savory beef brisket. In the book I refer to it as Texan BBQ, but I always had this delicious dish in mind. It is one of my favorites, and definitely worth trying at home.

Slow-cooked Beef Brisket

1 large beef brisket (plan on about one pound (uncooked) per person. This will result in approx. ½ pound portion sizes. *Don’t be alarmed to see it marbled with a good amount of fat. That is what makes it so tender.

1-2 tsp garlic salt

1 small bottle of liquid smoke (hickory is my favorite)

Aluminum Foil

Lay several long sheets (about 3 ½-4 feet each) of aluminum foil on counter in a criss-cross pattern, sort of like you’re creating a large foil snowflake.

Place raw (unwrapped) brisket in center and pierce several times with paring knife on both sides.

Next, generously pour liquid smoke over top and proceed to rub it into the meat. Repeat this on both sides as well. It will drip off and pool onto the foil, which is fine. That’s partially what the layers are for.

Once that’s done, sprinkle garlic salt over the entire thing and begin to wrap, flipping it over each time you seal up one layer. But first, notice which side is most fatty, and keep track – you’ll want that on top. Wrap layer by layer, until you’re down to the last one, again, assuring the fatty side is on top, and place it in a crockpot on low for approx. 8-10 hours depending on size. (Sometimes it requires a little push along the edges, or just a bit of time to reduce in size before the lid fits.) 

When done, peel away foil layers and trim off the fat. The brisket can now be sliced, but it will most likely be tender enough to simply shred away pieces with a fork and set onto a serving plate, or back into heated crockpot.

Serve this with warmed Famous Dave’s Original BBQ sauce. Sides that go well with this dish are: steak fries, BBQ beans, home made mac & cheese, fresh corn on the cob, Texas Toast, and or coleslaw.

“Jennifer Thornton, when are you going to grow up?”

Her head shot up at the familiar voice, but the late afternoon sun was behind him, wrapping him in a mantle of light spears. All that stood out was a set of very wide shoulders and the vague outline of dark glasses hiding his eyes.

About the Author

During her childhood in California, Becky Wade frequently produced homemade plays starring her sisters, friends, and cousins. These plays almost always featured a heroine, a prince, and a love story with a happy ending. She’s been a fan of all things romantic ever since.

Becky and her husband lived overseas in the Caribbean and Australia before settling in Dallas, Texas. It was during her years abroad that Becky’s passion for reading turned into a passion for writing. She published three historical romances for the general market, put her career on hold for many years to care for her kids, and eventually returned to writing sheerly for the love of it. She’s delighted to be penning warm, wry, and heartwarming contemporary romances for the Christian market. Her CBA debut, My Stubborn Heart, was a finalist in both the RITA and INSPY awards. Undeniably Yours kicked off her Texas-set Porter Family series. Her newest contemporary romance, Meant to Be Mine, has just hit shelves!

These days Becky can be found failing but trying to keep up with her housework, sweating at the gym, carting her kids around town, playing tennis, hunched over her computer, eating chocolate, or collapsed on the sofa watching TV with her husband.
